Maria Gorton

Maria is a painter living and working on Dharawal Land in the village of Robertson, NSW, Australia.

She is drawn to the notions of The Sublime, Melancholic Beauty and the Japanese Zen Philosophy of Sunyata, the void.

“I attempt with my work, to create a feeling of depth, mystery and ambiguity: a response to the unknown”.

Maria has a Bachelor of Art from The National Art School in Sydney and went on to complete a Master of Visual Arts and Master of Studio Arts (Honours) at The University of Sydney, SCA. Maria has been a finalist in The Wynne, The Blake, The Portia Geach, The Kings School Art Prize and Into the Light Art Prize at Whitewall Art Projects.

She has been an Artist in Residence at The Red Gate Gallery, Beijing and La Macina San Cresci in Italy. Her work is represented in Collections in NSW, including The Sydney Children’s Hospital and Barclays Bank. In Italy in Rome and Verona and at La Macchina Fissa, The Cultural Association of Rural Reading Retreats of Italy, where she has a permanent Collection.
